Students Must Know If They Have Dyslexia or ADD To Get The Help They Need

A person is not dyslexic and is not attention deficit disorder. We can have dyslexia or ADD, just as you may have blue eyes or brown hair or asthma. They are conditions that are parts of us, but none define us.

Dyslexia and ADD are not signs that your brain broken, just that it works differently than most people's.

The term "learning disability" describes a neurobiological disorder in which a person's brain works or is structured differently. These differences interfere with a person's ability to think and remember. Learning disabilities can affect a person's ability to speak, listen, read, write, spell, reason, recall, organize information, and do mathematics. Because learning disabilities cannot be seen, they often go undetected.

Report: Emotional and Mental Health Neglect Leads to Truancy

The Dyslexia Awareness and Resource Center is releasing to the public its year-long review of Santa Barbara City's truancy program, entitled "Emotional and Mental Health Neglect Leads to Truancy." Our report finds that the city is quick to allocate harsh solutions for the symptoms of truancy, while ignoring the underlying problems. Additionally, the 36-page review suggests that the current truancy program is causing more problems than it solves.

Myths About Dyslexia

Myth: Mirror writing is a symptom of dyslexia.
Truth: In fact, backwards writing and reversals of letters and words are common in the early stages of writing development among dyslexic and nondyslexic children alike. Dyslexic children have problems in naming letters but not in copying letters.

Myth: More boys than girls have dyslexia.
Truth: Boys' reading disabilities are indeed identified more often than girls', but studies indicate that such identification is biased. The actual prevalence of the disorder is nearly identical in the two sexes.

Most children have no trouble at all learning to read. At young ages they begin making connections between letters and sounds, sounds and words, words and thoughts. For these children, the process of reading is simple and natural.
